About Squirrels

Squirrels are a type of Melbourne rodent. Squirrels fall into many classes of animals including ground squirrels, tree squirrels, chipmunks, prairie dogs, flying squirrels, and woodchucks. These are all animals you most likely have heard of before, but probably did not consider that they all belonged to the same family of Florida animals.

Squirrels are mostly small Florida animals, usually no more than about four inches long. Some can be as large as 29 inches long however, but these are mostly found in mountainous areas. They are very light animals, usually weighing less than half a pound, but some larger members can get as big as 18 pounds. That is a lot of eaten nuts to get to that size. Squirrels hind legs are longer than their front legs, which is why Melbourne squirrels do not walk, but actually jump or hop to wherever they are going. They have soft pads on their feet which help them in gripping.

Tree squirrels are especially adept at climbing. They not only can climb trees, but are one of the few Melbourne animals that can safely descend down a tree head first. Their pads allow them to be able to hold onto tree bark with incredible firmness, so they can stay immobile for minutes before needing to continue down the tree. Squirrels live in every kind of habitat across the globe. This included rainforests to artic lands. Because their diet consists primarily of seeds and nuts they are able to find a stable diet no matter where they go. Squirrels are indigenous to every continent of the world except Antarctica and Australia. Although, they are now found on the land down under as they were introduced to Oceania about 10o years ago. Now they are thriving there as well.

Squirrel homes range from nests built in trees to holes in the ground. A squirrel will build a nest out of about any material, and will frequently make a home in a solitary location, like an attic or a chimney. While most are herbivores, there are some members that will eat insects and small vertebrates. In some areas, like desert and tundra, seeds and nuts are limited and so their diet has expanded to accommodate survival. Squirrels have huge incisors that they can use to gnaw. This is especially useful in opening nuts, like walnuts and almonds. Their side teeth in their mouth are made for grinding, so they can more easily digest the nuts. Because nuts can survive long durations of time without spoiling, they are the perfect food source for these critters. Nuts can be stored in a Florida squirrel’s home, and during long periods without finding new food or during periods when the cold air makes it impossible to go outside, the squirrel can live off of the stored nuts for long periods of time.
